I did some cartoons recently for the BNP.

No, not them. BNP Paribas, the Bank.

These were commissioned by the Compensation and Benefits department, and being a French company, I figured they’d appreciate some proper Asterix-style big gallic noses.

Reader’s Digest Beat The Cartoonist

The hardy little pocket-sized magazine Reader’s Digest run a monthly ‘Beat the Cartoonist’ competition – where readers are shown a cartoon with its caption removed, and are asked to submit possible amusing captions. The best couple are chosen and placed alongside the original caption as written by the cartoonist – and then subject to a vote to decide the best. The below is the current captionless cartoon, so have a go and see if YOU can beat ME at my own game. If you think of a good caption – send it off to the mag and you could win £100 and THE ORIGINAL VERSION of this wonderful wonderful artwork. Or, if you’d prefer, just post your ideas here.

Straeon Stribed yn y Gymraeg

Dwi’n awyddus iawn i ffindo mwy o bobl sy’n creu straeon stribed/comics yn y Gymraeg. Mae’n hen bryd gael rhyw fath o ‘si^n’ comics yn y gymraeg, ond wrth chwilio ar Google, yr unig pethe sy’n troi lan yw Dalen (sy’n gwneud gwaith da iawn o gyfieithu comics ffrengig i’r Gymraeg), a stwff fi! A dwi ddim yn neud jobyn da iawn o lanlwytho’n sdwff i i’r we. Os ych chi’n creu comics Cymraeg, neu’n nabod rhywun sy’n gwneud, cysylltwch a fi. Bydde fe’n gret allu creu rhyw fath o hwb ar-lein am comics a chartwnau cymraeg.

Wel, er mwyn rhoi rhyw ymdrech bach i gynyddu’r nifer o comics cymraeg sydd ar gael ar y we, dyma stribed wnes i (gyda’r bardd Osian Rhys Jones) flwyddyn ‘dwetha. Ma Osian di creu rhyw fath o ‘soundscape’ i’r stribed hefyd – sydd yma, ac efallai yn helpu deall beth yn y byd sy’n mynd ‘mlaen.

Here are a few cartoons of mine seen recently sneaking around on the pages of The Oldie magazine. All original artwork is for sale, should anyone out there have a cartoon-shaped (roughly A4, normally) gap on their favourite wall.

Shrewsbury International Cartoon Festival

Last weekend, I took part in the Shrewsbury International Cartoon Festival, which happens annually at, er, Shrewsbury. In amongst the general fooling about which inevitably occurs when a bunch of professional fools get together, I managed to squeeze in enough time to draw one of the ten or so ‘big boards’ on display in the town square.

The work was titled ’973 Well-dressed Gentlemen Chasing a Balloon’, and was a lot of fun to draw, though my arm was aching a bit by the end! I’m hoping to get some kind of prints done of the piece if I think there’s enough interest, so get in touch if you’d like a copy.

Pleser oedd gweithio gyda’r bardd Aneirin Karadog yn ddiweddar, yn creu darluniau ar gyfer ei gasgliad cynta o gerddi, ‘O Annwn i Geltia’. Dyma’r tro cynta imi creu lluniau yn seiliedig ar farddoniaeth, ac mi oedd yn her ond yn hwyl. Natur barddoniaeth yw i fod yn weddol weledol, llunie’n gal i creu gyda geiriau – felly mi oedd yna ddigon o ‘snapshots’ da i arlunio – ond y sialens yw i geisio hefyd cadw natur anelwig y gerdd -heb gymryd pethe’n rhy llythrennol. Gobeithio llwyddes i i troedio’r llinell yma…dwi ddim yn hollol siwr – ond mi ydw i (a Aneirin!) yn hapus gyda’r llunie.

Dweud y gwir, o’n i’n digon hapus i’w ail-greu yn fawr fel paentiadau. Mi fydd y gyfres o baentiadau yma ar ddangos mewn arddangosfa nesa project/ten, ac hefyd ar daith gyda Aneirin pan geiff y llyfr ei lansio. Mwy o fanylion i ddilyn ar yr hen Trydar!

RFU Fiasco Cartoon

As a welsh rugby fan, I can assure all my readers that I am thoroughly enjoying every second of this monumental implosion of English rugby. I apologise if this makes me a horrible person.

2012 North Stand Rugby Calendars

“The greatest calendar in the history of the world ever.”

“So funny, I laughed a sprout out of my nose and I don’t even eat sprouts.”

“Intensely rich and aromatic.”

…are some quotes that may well be made about the 2012 North Stand calendar once people get their hands on them. Be one of the first and buy today!

There will be a very limited print run this year, as I’m off to India on the 9th of December, so get your orders in well before then. Great present idea for rugby-loving family and friends.

You’ll notice that the calendars are an inflation-busting £1 cheaper than last year…hopefully makes up for the dodgy dates in last year’s edition. This one’s been triple-checked, I promise!

Rugby Paper Martin Johnson Cartoon

Inspired by a quote from England flanker Tom Croft claiming that under-fire manager Martin Johnson should not be axed beacause he’s “A great figurehead for England rugby”, I whipped up this editorial cartoon for the Rugby Paper this week, along with the usual North Stand.
