Playing on Words

An occasional annoyance inherent in the speculative submission side of this cartooning game (i.e sending off batches of cartoons to magazine editors, and hoping they buy some), is that editors often choose cartoons that I’d consider the weak ones of the batch. The hilarious cartoons – carefully crafted, pored over, and drawn up with tender touch – remain unpublished, while their ugly, hurried runt siblings strut their stuff on the pages of national magazines. There’s a moral to the story somewhere.

Anyway, here’s a couple of punny/word-play type runts that I don’t find hilarious, myself, but are nonetheless in this month’s Prospect and Saga magazine, respectively. Am I being harsh on them? Let me know what you think.

…oh, and the Tequila Mockingbird one is an old idea, I’m told. Done a million times before. That kinda increases it’s runty status.

I thought everything you did was simply awesome. Until I read this.

    And cheers Carlos…I think…

If Private Eye was only read by cartoonists then they’d pick your cleverer stuff instead of the straightforward wordplays. Until that day, they’ll pick the more facile stuff to appeal to the broadest audience.

I run my cartoons past my girlfriend. The ones she laughs out loud at are the ones I despair that I drew, while the stuff I enjoyed creating she looks at with head tilted to one side, squinting and invariably going ‘eh?’.

Totally agree curis, my wife has since learnt to ask beforehand which ones I’ve slaved over and love, and to laugh harder at them than the ones she actually finds funny…
